From one of my surfing today, came across this
I'm sure many are in this category, and if one writes a particular genre would it seem logical to seek an editor in that field, one that has worked on many bestsellers. Also keep in mind that the market has changed, from using simple things such as Tiktok or Amazon.
As in this author's inquiry...
I’ve been writing for over 10 years, looking to self publish a novella. I’ve never worked with a freelance editor before, I was wondering if anybody could go over their experiences with it. The book is a heroic fantasy that currently sits at around 39,000 words.
I’ve been sourcing around on the Internet trying to find editors, mostly looking for developmental editing at this point. I found several that might be helpful through Reedsy and some pretty extensive googling. Most of the offers I’ve received have been in the neighborhood of about 1K, which is about what I was expecting. I recently received an offer from an editor with several big names in her portfolio (Sanderson, a Dan Wells, etc.). She says she is fairly selective about who she works with, so I was very excited to get the offer. However, her offer is priced in the neighborhood of 4K, and that’s after a discount for this not being a full length novel.
Obviously this is rather pricey, but obviously I’m no expert on the market value a freelance editors in science-fiction and fantasy. Has anyone else had experiences with editors like this? What have your experience has been like, and how did you feel you found a fair price for your project?
